Can Supplements Affect Hair Health

There are many different things in the world and in ourselves that can cause problems with hair health or even lead to hair loss. Illness is one issue; some conditions cause hair loss, or at the very least, they cause hair to become brittle and unhealthy. Another problem is the environment; pollutants in the air can cause hair to become dull and break easily. Even treatments for some diseases, such as chemotherapy, can have a detrimental effect on our hair. 

However, you might not have considered that the supplements you take to help you work out better or even simply to boost your vitamin intake might also be negatively affecting your hair health. Vitamins And Hair Loss 

It is the vitamins in the supplements you take that can have the biggest effect on your hair. In some cases, this is a positive effect. B vitamins such as biotin, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid can all help improve your hair’s health. They are actually essential for good hair growth, and a lack of them can even cause hair loss. Vitamin B12 is particularly useful, as it repairs hair cells and therefore actively improves how well your hair grows. Although we have just talked about how hair health can be improved by taking additional supplements, this is not always the case. Some supplements will have the opposite effect, and rather than ensuring your hair grows well and looks healthy and shiny, they can lead to additional hair loss. If you are otherwise healthy but have found that you are losing a lot of hair, it could be because of the supplements you are taking, and it’s worth investigating further to see if this could be the case. If so, an easy way to fix the issue is to reduce or even stop taking the supplements. 

Vitamin A is a good example of a good thing that can become a problem. As we’ve said, vitamin A is one of the vitamins that promote healthy hair, and since it is good for other reasons as well, many people will want to add more of it to their diet, and that can be done through supplements. However, it must be taken with caution and in moderation. Too much vitamin A can actually cause hair loss.
